The West Michigan Nursery & Landscape
Association is a non-profit organization of green industry
businesses located from Saugatuck to Whitehall. Over the
years we have focused on providing our membership with educational
opportunities through monthly seminars on topics ranging
from workplace safety, horticulture, and landscape design
to business-building, effective marketing, and ownership
transition methods.
In 1998, WMNLA developed a
scholarship fund designed to provide support for any West
Michigan individual seeking higher education or certification
in a green-industry related field. This effort has become
a focal point for our membership and our communities who
have generously supported the effort each year. The Grand
Haven Area Community Foundation administers the fund and
they provide information to area schools and students about
the opportunity, as well as providing the initial clearinghouse
for applications through the website www.ghacf.org. The first
year, WMNLA awarded one $1500 scholarship and since then
have granted over to $10,000 in scholarships to West Michigan
students who we hope will one day become professionals in
our industry.
Our primary fundraiser for
the scholarship fund is our annual golf outing, the Annual
WMNLA Scholarship Golf Outing - organized by WMNLA with the
generous support from Earth Service & Supply of Grandville,
to be held this year on Friday, September 1 1 at the The
Meadows Golf Course at Grand Valley State University in Allendale.
First and foremost, as a provider
to many green industry firms and professionals, you are invited
to participate and come out for an afternoon of fun, camaraderie,
and networking. You can register singly, in pairs, or teams.
We will match you up with other players if you do not have
a full team.
Second, we would be thrilled
if you chose to be a Hole Sponsor for the day for a $50 donation
to the scholarship fund. In recognition of your donation,
we will place a professionally produced sign with your business
name at the tee and your firm will be highlighted in our
monthly newsletter that goes out to all member firms. We
appreciate any level of support you might be able to offer.
Through the generosity of businesses like yours, we were
able to contribute over $3,500 to the fund after last year’s
outing!
We developed the scholarship
fund to provide opportunities to members of our communities
and to strengthen our industry by helping to prepare future
professionals. I hope you are able to support our efforts
and please join us for a fun afternoon. Being a great golfer
is definitely not required.
Sincerely,
Kyle Lohman, President 2009/10
